NC State Co-Working Day at AFTC 106 Multi-Purpose Room (Avent Ferry Technology Center)

February 8, 2013 from 8am to 5pm
There's no schedule, no set agenda, just bring yourself, your laptop. About co-working... -- Don't show up with nothing to work on.  Have something in mind, whether it is something from your current work or some project you would like to start. -- If you have some problem that you have been struggling with, bring it.  The point of these things is to take advantage of others expertise. -- Come prepared to help other people.  This is not only about getting help for yourself, but helping other…See More

Tell us a little about yourself:
I've worked at NCSU in some capacity for 8 years, mostly focusing on application development.

Our group's main focus is on PHP and MySQL. We have drank the Zend Koolaid and do a LOT of work with Zend Framework and Zend Studio. We also heavily use jQuery and mootools as our primary javascript libraries. We use Smarty for templating right now. Lately we have been in the land of Drupal...but apparently everyone on campus is in that land now :)

We are big fans of version control, so we keep all our projects in subversion. You can check out or projects that we have going at http://webapps.ncsu.edu/lifecycle/.

Our applications focus mostly on internal support tools, but all of our work is open sourced. Another primary function of our job is helping people determine their workflows, then building applications that enhance that process. We also teach some classes (which a lot of you guys have been to) on Zend Framework, PHP5 and design patterns. We don't get to do it as much as we would like because we have a lot going on.

Set Raleigh on Fire! #IgniteRaleigh 2009

Last night was the inaugural #IgniteRaleigh event at the Lincoln Theater downtown. If you are not familiar with what Ignite events are, the gist is that presenters have 5 minutes and 20 slides to talk about something. "Entertain us, but do it fast". It is basically a week-long conference worth of presentations, ideas, entertainment, and networking in 2 hours!

#IgniteRaleigh had 15 presentations, some good, some bad, some… Continue

No more Interview 2.0: Now, Campus Spotlight

Because of the immense amount of work it has taken to get an interview done, processed, and posted, we have decided to change it up a bit. We aren't getting rid of the interviews, just broadening the horizon a bit to make the feature more flexible.

Instead of just interviews, we are going to be doing a campus spotlight on interesting happenings that are going on around campus. We will be working with you guys to give us ideas for things we can report on, like applications,… Continue

Collaborate Together, or Get RIFed Alone

I don't often get inspired by watching TV shows. Most of the time, they are just entertainment for entertainments sake, but I had a revelation while watching LOST relating to the way our University (dis)functions.

If you think I am going to compare some administrator to "the others", or call another one the smoke monster, you'd be wrong. No, what got me was at the end of season 2 where Jack was talking to his people and he told them "if we don't live together, we will die alone".… Continue

Hi Jason,

Do we have to have the Google ads at the right, e.g., Pimp my Profile, How Rachel Ray Lost 30lbs? :) Anyway to dump those? Thanks.

Jason,

We have been looking at using Shibboleth to front-end the OrgSync application. OrgSync already has NC A&T and Appalachian State as clients and we were attempting to get them sponsored into the UNC identity federation. Unfortunately, that's stalled for the time being because UNC-GA needs to work on establishing an attribute release policy for student information. We may pursue a peer-to-peer shib connection though. I'll let you know when we make progress with this.
